TUTORIAL: MY EXPERIMENT IN MIXED MEDIA

I’m fascinated with mixed media art but have little time to delve in the way I want to.  But I decided I would just do one!  It has a steampunk theme since I had a lot of things I could use in my stash and I really love steampunk.  LOL

I had some canvases that sat sadly alone by my desk waiting for me to use them so I used one for my project.  I was happy with it as it had depth (its canvas stretched on a wood frame) but wasn’t as heavy as a piece of wood would be.  Its 9.5 inches by 10 inches so not so big that I might not finish it but still enough to put lots of things on it.

My next task was to find things to put on it.  I searched every drawer that might have screws, bolts, etc.  I also checked my jewelry pieces drawer.  And the thing I really wanted to see if I could incorporate was Free Standing Lace (FSL).  I have quite a few pieces – you can use any leftovers, even pieces that might not be *perfect*. The FSL can add a lot of texture to your project.

I hope you will have fun following along and creating your own one of a kind masterpiece!

I have since done a more *flowery* mixed media. .  It made of a canvas board as my first project, Lace, beads of various kinds – the flowers are acrylic beads, mother of pearl – charms and beads, acrylic leaves, Czech crystals for flower centers.  I painted everything when done with a clear acrylic paint, with fine iridescent glitter.

Laura’s Stained Glass Horses

Howdy.  I wanted to show you my finished project.  I absolutely love the variegated thread stained glass designs and finished the embroidery  a while ago.  I just couldn’t decide on how to frame it.
As I was hunting through my fabric stash, I ran across this piece of wood-grained print that I had previously used on one of your Green-Man designs  It matched perfectly, and the clean lines of this type of framing really compliment the stained- glass look.. I’m ready for another variegated thread project-hint-hint-hint!.  BTW, this is stitched on white felt overlaid with a iridescent mylar film.  It really glissens.  Thanks for making me look good with all your wonderful digitizing!  Laura

Great idea using the white felt with the mylar!  I think we too often forget how great felt is for stitching.  Beautiful picture Laura,  Suz

Laura’s Poppies

Finished up your poppy design.  It’s for a friend in an extended care facility.  I know it will brighten up her rather dull days.  Fairy Frost is the background for the embroidery, and the purple batik plays with it so well!  It really brings the lavender poppy to life.  Thanks again for your great designs.  Laura

Love  the purple!  You are so right – that really sets off the whole picture.  Your friend will love having it to brighten up her space  Suz

Sophie’s Tiger Jacket

Hi Suz!

I just wanted to share my progress on this design. I’m absolutely in love with it! Now that I have worked out the formatting haha. I’m so sorry, you must think I’m rather daft. I understand the formatting now, I won’t have any questions in the future.

It stitches out so beautifully without one single hitch. Not one thread break which I find incredible considering the level of detail! I’ve still got a few more things to add to the overall design but I’ve already had a lot of comments on the tiger. I haven’t made anything for myself for ages, this one is really special.

I will definitely be stocking up on more of your designs, I have a wish list as long as my arm!     Sophie

Your jacket is just beautiful Sophie.  I love the contrast of the tiger and the flowers – strength and beauty.  Suz

Cherie and Variegated Thread

The metallic runs with no problem I set it on floor a tip I heard,  and it beautiful so I was excited when I saw it on sale. Any Way  I love all your thread . I made a bunch of crosses for my sister in Montana with Your variegated thread. I add a ribbon so it can be used for bookmark.

Here are some I made last night. Some I use the variegated in bobbin and some I just use a dominate color for bobbin and looks just as good. The blue I used a darker blue as bobbin.  Cherie

I love the look of the variegated for the FSL (free standing Lace) – great Idea!

Laura’s Steampunk Hats

Thought you would like to see what I did with your Steampunk Hats.  My twin 12 year old twin grandsons just  moved into a new home and for the first time have their own bedrooms. So i made them each a housewarming gift.  The rust color is Fairy Frost.  I’m not sure of the brand of the map fabric. I really like how the two fabrics work together. I love how the maps go so well with the steampunk theme.  Thanks so much for your unique designs. …..Laura

You  are very welcome Laura!  You won my heart with these delightful wall hangings.  I too love the fairy frost with the map print.  It gives a very vintage, but bright look.
